About the Customer
BytePe is a consumer technology platform offering subscription-based access to high-end tech products, letting customers upgrade or swap devices without the burden of long-term ownership. To support that growth, BytePe migrated from Azure to Google Cloud for stronger scalability, security, and operational performance on a future-ready, cost-efficient architecture.
Business Requirement
Migrate BytePe's platform and workloads from Azure to Google Cloud. Three challenges defined success:
Scalability
Handling a growing user base and data volume was becoming difficult and expensive on Azure.
Cost Optimization
Azure spend was not optimized, prompting a move to a more cost-effective platform.
Seamless Migration
The cutover had to be executed with minimal disruption to live services.
Value Delivered
Migrating to Google Cloud translated directly into the outcomes that mattered most, measured against the challenges above.
Reduction in infrastructure costs within the first year.
Greater platform scalability without performance degradation.
Improvement in application response times from optimized infrastructure and networking.
Recommended Solution
A phased migration to Google Cloud focused on security, performance, scalability, and cost-effectiveness.
Infrastructure Migration
Node.js backends moved from Azure VMs to Managed Instance Groups; managed MySQL → Cloud SQL via dump-and-restore with minimal downtime; Azure Blob → Cloud Storage via Storage Transfer Service. Added Memorystore (Redis) caching, Cloud API Gateway, and active-passive DR across Mumbai and Delhi with cross-region replication and 30-minute backups.
Data Migration Strategy
A phased approach with integrity validation at every stage: MySQL dump-and-restore and Storage Transfer Service for Blob → Cloud Storage, with consistency checks after each phase.
Security & Compliance
Defense-in-depth with IAM, VPC firewalls, Cloud Armor, and Security Command Center (Premium). A Jump Server (Bastion Host) removed public access to backends; Terraform with GitLab CI/CD ensured consistent, secure deployments across isolated Production and Non-Production environments.
Performance Optimization
Memorystore (Redis) caching reduced database load and improved response times; Cloud Load Balancing and Cloud CDN optimized traffic distribution, latency, and availability.
Application Integration
Cloud API Gateway centralized secure routing to backend APIs; Compute Engine backends integrated with Cloud SQL, Memorystore, Cloud Storage, and Cloud Load Balancing.
Architecture
Cloud Ambassadors Solution
Cloud Ambassadors delivered a secure, production-ready Google Cloud environment through a structured multi-phase migration:
Infrastructure Establishment
- Secure landing zone: isolated Production, Stage, Development, and Shared projects on a Shared VPC.
- Compute Engine, Cloud SQL with cross-region DR, Memorystore, API Gateway, Load Balancer, Cloud CDN, and Cloud Armor.
- Jump Server (Bastion Host) for secure administrative access.
- Security Command Center (Premium) for continuous posture management and threat detection.
Automated Deployment
- GitLab CI/CD integrated with Terraform for secure, repeatable, consistent provisioning across environments.
Workload & Data Migration
- Migrated application workloads from Azure VMs to Compute Engine.
- Database migration via MySQL dump-and-restore.
- Azure Blob → Cloud Storage using Storage Transfer Service with integrity validation and minimal downtime.
Testing & Validation
- Cloud Operations Suite (Monitoring, Logging, Alerting) for end-to-end observability.
- Functional validation, performance testing, and data verification across Cloud SQL and Cloud Storage.
Integration & Handover
- Production cutover, comprehensive documentation, and knowledge transfer with the BytePe team.
- Post-migration hypercare support for a smooth transition.
Business Outcome
Beyond the headline metrics, the migration produced a modern, resilient platform built for growth.
Modern, resilient platform
A modern, resilient, security-first platform ready for BytePe's growth and future scale.
Layered security
Cloud Armor, a dedicated Jump Server, customer-managed SSL, private networking, and Security Command Center (Premium) reduced the attack surface and improved governance.
Auto-scaling with cost control
Managed Instance Groups scale automatically with demand while optimizing infrastructure cost.
Long-term savings
A 3-year committed-use discount adds significant long-term cost savings.
